Classic Car: Lamborghini Countach

The history of Lamborghinin is quite fascinating.  Ferruccio Lamborghini originally built tractors.  He owned several Ferraris.  He found out that the clutches were inferior.  He confronted Enzo Ferrari about the problems with his cars.  Enzo told  Ferruccio, "How dare a tractor maker tell me how to make a sports car."  Infuriated, Ferruccio Lamborghini created his own brand of sports cars.  His first car was the 350GT, a front engine, rear-wheel drive grand tourer.  One of the more famous Lambos is the Countach, built from 1974 to 1990.  2,042 Countaches were made.

I first saw the Countach at the 2010 Houston Classic Chassis.  First thought was "What a piece of art.  This is one of the best looking classic cars I have ever seen."  The Countach has made several appearances at Houston Cars and Coffee.

The Lamborghini Countach came in four specs, with a 25 anniversary edition. The Countach LP400 came 4.0L V12 that produced 370 hp, 266 lb-ft torque, and went from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 sec, with a top speed of 177 mph.  The Countach LP400S came 4.0L V12 that produced 370 hp, 266 lb-ft torque, and went from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 sec, with a top speed of 182 mph. The Countach LP500S came 5.0L V12 that produced 370 hp, 302 lb-ft torque, and went from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 sec, with a top speed of 181 mph. The Countach LP500SQV came 5.2L V12 that produced 449 hp, 369 lb-ft torque, and went from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 sec, with a top speed of 182 mph. This is a fast car, no matter what engine is in it.  The body may look like it has great aerodynamics, but its body is like a brick moving through air.

The Lamborghini Countach has been featured at Jay Leno's Garage.  It has been featured in many racing games, including Burnout Paradise, Project Gotham Racing 4, Grand Turismo 5, and Forza Motorsport 3, adn Test Drive Unlimited.  It was part of a DLC package for Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit.  Red Alert from Transformers G1 used the Countach as his vehicle mode.  The boys of Top Gear used the Countach as one of its exhibits when they took over an art museum in Great Britain.

Final Thought:  What a work of art. It is a great looking car. It is fast and a great addition to any classic car collection. One can see  the Countach design in the Lamborghini Diablo and Murcielago.

First Impression: Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera

The Lamborghini Gallardo was introduced in 2003. It is the most produces Lamborghini to date, with over 10,000 Gallardos made. Lamborghini introduced the Gallardo LP560-4 in 2008. In 2010, Lamborghini wanted to inprove the performance of the Gallardo LP560-4. Some car makers, reduce the weight of a car, while other car makers add power to the engine. Lamborghini added 10 extra hp to a variant of the Gallardo LP560-4 while decreasing its weight by 220 lbs. This version is known as the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera.

I first saw the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera at the October 2010 edition of Houston Cars and Coffee. When I first saw this car, it was yellow and still looked cool. I saw an orange Superleggera at the April 2011 edition of Houston Cars and Coffee and it was right next to a yellow Ferrari F360. I think it looks better in orange than yellow, but that is my opinion. It looks fast and has a beautiful exhaust noise. It is a great car.

The Superleggera is powered by a 5.2L V10 engine that is paired to a six-speed manual transmission. It gets 570 hp and 398.3 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and reached a top speed of 202 mph. This is one fast car. Prices for the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera start at $244,295, that includes a $3,700 gas guzzler tax.

The Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 is playable in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. It is available for both the police and the racers. Motorweek has reviewed the Superleggera. It was one of three Lamborghinis shown on the pilot episode of Top Gear USA. Adam Ferrara drove this car and reached 180 mph in the standing mile. It was featured in Top Gear Series 10, episode 1, where the guys were on a quest to find the greatest road in the world. Jeremy Clarkson drove the Superleggera.

Final Thoughts: It is a great car. If you get into one, hold on because this is a fast car. It is also one of the better looking supercars. Modern Lamborghinis are known for power, but they are also easy to handle. Top Gear showed an old lady, a little boy, and a dog driving a Lamborghini Gallardo to show how easy it is to drive.

Classic Car: Lamborghini Diablo

One of my favorite cars growing up was the Lamborghini Diablo. I had a scale model of this car. Produced from  1990 to 2001, 2884 Diablos were made. One could get a Diablo coupe or a Diablo roadster with a carbon fiber targa top. There were five variants of the first generation Diablo: VT (viscous traction) which had all wheel drive, SE30 which was a lighter, more powerful than the standard Diablo, SE30 Jota which was a circuit ready version of the SE30, SV (super veloce) which was a more powerful version of the standard Diablo, and the VT Roadster. The second generation Diabo variants were the SV, VT, VT Roadster, GT, and VT 6.0. Then the Diablo first came out in 1991, it dethroned the Ferrari F40 as the world's fastest production car, reaching a speed of 207 mph. It reign as the speed king was short lived because later in 1991, the Bugatti EB110 was released and it reached a top speed of 213 mph.

I saw a blue Diablo roadster at the September 2010 edition of Houston Cars and Coffee. It is better looking than the scale model I had growing up. The Diablo is one of the best looking cars of the 1990s. I love its sleek design. Its a beautiful car. And it is as fast as it looks.

Lamborghini Diablo Engine
The Diablo came with a 5.7L V12 engine and a five-speed manual transmission. The GT and VT 6.0 variants came with a 6.0L V12. Power output for the Diablo ranged from 500 hp to 600 hp and torque ranged from 428 lb-ft to 471 lb-ft. The 6.0L V12 in the GT got 583 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. It took less than 4 seconds for the Diablo to go from 0 to 60 mph. The top speed for the Diablo is 207 mph. It is one of the fastest cars to come from the 1990s.

The Diablo SV has been featured on www.jaylenosgarage.com. You can drive this classic Lambo in Test Drive Unlimited, Forza Motorsport 3, Need For Speed games, Test Drive 3, Stunt Man, Saints Row, San Francisco Rush 2049, Project Gotham Racing 4, Grand Turismo games, Ridge Racer, and many other video games. To see the full list, check out IGCD.net.

Final Thoughts: I love this car. It is fast and I could stare at it for hours. I was glad someone brought it to Cars and Coffee. It is great to see one of my favorite cars from my childhood up close.  It is one of the best cars to come out of the 90s. Lamborghini continued the trend of fast, beautiful cars with the Murcielago.

First Impression: Lamborghini Murcielargo

Lamborghini has been making supercars since 1963. In 1998, Volkswagen's luxury car division Audi acquired Lamborghini. The first car built by Lamborghini under Audi was the Lamborghini Murcielago. The Murcielago was built from 2002 to 2010 with 4,099 Murcielagos built. The second generation of the Murcielago called the Lamborghini Murcielago LP 640. The Murcielago comes in two-door coupe or two-door roadster versions.

The Murcielago is a regular at Houston Cars and Coffee events. The Murcielago is one eye-catching Lambo. It does resemble its predecessor, the Lamborghini Diablo. An interesting design feature of the Murcielago are the rear air vents. They come out when the car is traveling at high speeds to deliver more air to the engine. The Murcielago looks fast, aggressive, and is an eye-catcher.

The Lamborghini Murcielago originally came with 6.2L V12 that produced 572 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The Lamborghini Murcielago LP 640 is powered by a 6.5L V12, paired with either a six-speed manual tranmission or an optional six-speed e-gear transmission, that produces 631 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. The Murcielago LP 640 goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 211 mph. Prices for a new Murcielago Lp 640 started at $318,800. That is quite expensive for a car, but the Murcielago is fast, quick, and just stunning.

Top Gear featured the original Murcielago during Series 1, Episode 1. The Murcielago Roadster was reviewed by Top Gear during Series 6, Episode 11. The Murcielago LP 640 was reviewed by Top Gear during Series 9, Episode 5. A 2007 Murcielago Roadster made a stop by Jay Leno's Garage. Motorweek reviewed a 2003 Murcielago. The Murcielago is playable in the Forza games, Need For Speed Games, Ridge Racer games, Gran Turismo games, ModNation Racers, Asphalt games, Project Gotham Racing 4, Midnight Club games, and many other video games.

Final Thoughts: I loved the Lamborghini Countach. I loved the Lamborghini Diablo. And I love the Lamboghini Murcielago. This car is fast, quick, and stunning. But it costs over $300,000, which is quite expensive. No modern Ferrari can compete with the Murcielago and it is cheaper than a 599 GTO.

First Impression: Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce

Lamborghini produced the Murcielago from 2002 to 2010 with 4,099 Murcielagos being made. At the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, Lamborghini revealed the fastest version of the Murcielago, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, or Murcielago SV for short.. Only 350 Murcielago SVs were built. The only other Lamborghinis with SV versions were the Diablo and Muira.

I saw the Lamborghini Murcielago SV at the December 2010 Houston Cars and Coffee event. This was the same event where Hennessey revealed its Venom GT. There were a bunch of Lambos at the event, but the Murcielago stood out from the rest of Lambos there. The SV moniker on the rear side panels and the rear wing help the Murcielago stand out. This Lambo looks very aggressive and very fast.

The Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce is powered by a 6.5L V12 engine, paired with a six-speed e-Gear transmission or an optional six-speed manual transmission, that produces 661 hp and 490 lb-ft of torque. The Murcielago goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 213 mph with an optional small spoiler and 209 mph with the standard aeropack wing. Prices for the Murcielago SV start at $450,000. That is very expensive for a car. The Murcielago costs over $130,000 more than a Murcielago LP 640. But it is 2 mph faster and gets from 0 to 60 mph 0.2 seconds quicker than the Murcielago LP. The SV is also 220 lbs lighter than the standard Murcielago.

The Lamborghini Murcielago SV made a stop by Jay Leno's Garage. Top Gear's Richard Hammond reviewed the Murcielago SV during Series 13, Episode 2. The Murcielago SV is playable in Driver: San Francisco, Gran Turismo 5, Forza Motorsport 3, Car Town, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, and Carbon Auto Theft 2.

Final Thoughts: What a car! The Lamborghini Murcielago was already quick, fast, stunning car. The Murcielago SV is a Murcielago on steroids. The Murcielago SV is a faster, quicker, stunning, aggressive version of the Murcielago. The SV is just too expensive with a price starting at $450,000. It is not fast enough to be considered a hyper car and there are cars that can reach speeds over 220 mph and cost $50,000 less than the Murcielago SV. But the Murcielago SV looks better than those cars. If you want a fast, quick, stunning, eye-catching, aggressive supercar, go with the Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, if you can afford it.

Classic Car: Lamborghini 350GT

Ferruccio Lamborghini originally built tractors. He owned a few Ferraris. His Ferraris had inferior clutches. He brought up his dissatisfaction to Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari told him "How dare a tractor make tell me how to make a sports car." Angered by Ferrari, Lamborghini toke Ferrari's chief mechanic and started making his own cars. Lamborghini believed that grand tourers should have high performance, good ride quality, and a quality interior. He created his own car company and the first car with the Lamborghini badge is the Lamborghini 350GTV, which would be the prototype and forerunner for the 350GT, Lamborghini's first production model. Lamborghini first revealed the car in March of 1964 at the Geneva Auto Show and went into production in May 1964. Production ended in 1966 with 135 350GTs being made.

I recently saw the 350GT at the October 2011 edition of Houston Cars and Coffee. There was a good size crowd around the car. This is a good looking car. When you look at a Gallardo or a Diablo or a Miura, it is hard to imagine that those three rear-mid-engine cars are descendants of a front-engine, rear-wheel drive grand tourer. Lamborghini has not made a front-engine car since the Espada's production run ended in 1978. Modern Ferraris share some characteristics of classic Ferraris. No modern Lamborghini looks anything like the 350GT. It is a shame because I believe that Lamborghini should make a front-engine car with some styling characteristics of the 350GT to compete with Ferrari front-engine grand tourers.

The 350GT is powered by 3.5L V12 engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission, that produces 280 hp and 241 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 156 mph. In 1965, a new 350GT cost $13,900, which was expensive for that time. The current value for the 350GT is in the range of $45,000 and $89,700. That is very low considering that the 350GT was the first Lamborghini produced.

The 350GT has been featured on Jay Leno's Garage. Great Cars, Top Gear, Cars.TV, Sports Auto: Lamborghini-Essais, and Rides have all featured the 350GT.

The 350GT is a great classic car. It is a must have in any car collection. It is the first Lamborghini so any Lambo collector should not pass on this car. It is also a great addition for any Italian car collection. It is a classic grand tourer and should be treated with care and respect, but it also should be driven for weekend cruising. The Diablo, Gallardo, Miura, and Aventador would not have existed if not for the 350GT.

First Impression: Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

Since the Miura, Lamborghini has had a rear-mid engine supercar powered by a V12. Lamborghini ended its run of the Murcielago on November 5, 2010. To replace the it, Lamborghini came out with the Aventador LP700-4. The Aventador is the latest, rear-mid engine, four-wheel drive, supercar from Lamborghini.

I recently saw the Aventador at the October 2011 edition of Houston Cars and Coffee. Lamborghini of Houston was very kind and exhibited the car. I have much respect for a dealership who decide to go to informal car gathering and meet potential customers and car enthusiasts. There was a consistent huge crowd around the Aventador. The Hennessey Venom GT was the other car that had a consistent huge crowd. This is a highly-stylized, big, aggressive, easy on the eyes supercar. Lamborghini never fails when it comes to making big, powerful supercars.

The Aventador is powered by a 6.5L V12, paired with a seven-speed semi-automatic transmission, that produces 690 hp (700PS) and 510 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in about 2.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 217 mph. Prices for the Aventador start at $379,700. That is a lot of money for a supercar. But most supercars do not have the size or the performance of the Aventador.

The Aventador has made a visit to Jay Leno's Garage. It has been reviewed by Top Gear's Richard Hamond during Series 17, Episode 7. It went around the test track in 1:16.5, beating the Bugatti Veyron Supersport. Only the Ariel Atom V8 500 and McLaren MP4-12C went around the track faster than the Aventador. The Aventador is playable in Forza Motorsport 4, Need For Speed: The Run, and Car Town.

Final Thoughts: I love the styling of the Aventador. Since the Miura's arrival in 1966, Lamborghini has yet to make a poor rear-mid engine, V12 powered supercar. The Countach, Diablo, and Murcielago are all great V12 supercars with incredible styling. All three of those cars are works of art. Now you can add the Aventador to that list. The car is expensive with a price starting at $379,700, but it is beautiful and fast. For that money you can get a Lexus LFA, which is slower and not as stylish as the Aventador. The Ferrari Enzo has the same top speed of the Aventador, but getting the Enzo at a car auction will cost at least $1 million. If you are looking for a highly stylish, high performing supercar for around $400,000, you have to be a fool to pass on the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4.

First Impression: Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante

Lamborghini has been producing the Gallardo since 2003. There have been several versions of the Gallardo, including two different Gallardo Superleggeras. In 2010, Lamborghini decided to make a convertible version of the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera, calling this version the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder Performante. The Gallardo Performante weighs 321 lbs more than the Gallardo Superleggera, but the Performante still weighs 143 lbs less than the standard Gallardo Spyder.

I first saw the Gallardo Performante at the November 2011 edition of Houston Cars and Coffee. I love the styling of this car. It looks aggressive and fast. I do not think that the Gallardo Superleggera needed to be a convertible, but it looks awesome. The carbon fiber accents helps the car stand out. It works with the Gallardo Superleggera and it works with the Gallardo Performante. The Performante is one of the better looking convertibles out there and is one of the best looking versions of the Gallardo.

The Gallardo Performante is powered by a 5.2L V10, paired with a six-speed e-gear transmission, that produces 570 hp and 398.3 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 201 mph. The price for the Performante is $248,000. A standard Gallardo has a base price of $205,000. The Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder starts at $224,600. The Gallardo Superleggera starts for $237,600. The Gallardo Performante has the same top speed and is 0.1 seconds quicker to 60 mph than the Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder. Based on performance, the Performante is overpriced. But the standard Gallardo Spyder does not have the styling that the Performante has.

The Gallardo Performante has been featured on Clarkson: Powered Up, Fifth Gear, and The Car Show.

Final Thought: I love the styling of the car. It looks aggressive. But the Gallardo Performante is not as quick or as fast as a Gallardo Superleggera, yet is costs over $10,000 more than the Superleggera. Then again, convertibles are usually more expensive that coupes. Whether you go with the Gallardo Performante or the Gallardo Superleggera, you will get one stylish, fast supercar.

First Impression: Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale

There have been many special editions of the Lamborghini Gallardo. There has been the Gallardo Superleggera, Gallardo LP550-2 Valetino Balboni, Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante, Bicolore, Tricolore, and Nera Coupe. Now, Lamborghini has come out with the Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale.

I recently was the Super Trofeo at the January 2012 edition of Cars and Coffee. There were several Gallardos and Gallardo Superleggeras at the event, but none of them stood out like the Super Trofeo. The featured car of the event has a special location. Past cars parked here include the Lamborghini Aventador and Ferrari Enzo. The Super Trofeo has a few exterior features that help it stand out from other Gallardos. The Super Trofeo has a more aggressive front end, a rear wing that is more aggressive than the wing on Superleggera, and a slitted carbon fiber hood instead of a glass hood. Theses modifications gives the Super Trofeo a very aggressive styling, and I love cars with aggressive styling. The Super Trofeo styling is more aggressive than the Superleggera styling. And the Super Trofeo is rare. Only 150 Super Trofeos will be built. This is no ordinary Gallardo, something I did not notice the first time I saw this car. For a featured car, the Super Trofeo did not get that much attention. The Enzo and Aventador had people swarming them. People were not swarming the Super Trofeo. They might have thought it was just another special edition Gallardo.

The Super Trofeo is powere by a 5.2L V10 engine, paired with a six-speed e-gear semi-automatic transmission, that produces 562 hp and 398 ft-lb of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 198 mph. The Super Trofeo is quickest Gallardo, it has one of the lowest top speeds. The Super Trofeo has the same top speed as the different Gallardo LP550-2 versions. The base price for the Super Trofeo is around $250,000. The base Gallardo LP560-4 starts around $202,000 and is faster (top speed of 202 mph) than the Super Trofeo. The Super Trofeo is rare, aggressive, and very quick. For a Gallardo, $250,000 is expensive.

The Super Trofeo has been featured in Auto Esporte.

Final Thought: The Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale is a Gallardo race car that you can legally drive on the streets. It is the best looking Gallardo that has been built. It is better looking that the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera and I love the styling of the Superleggera. The Super Trofeo is very quick but it cannot go over 200 mph like other Gallardos. The Super Trofeo is rare. Only 150 will be built. The Super Trofeo will be expensive for what it is. It is expected to cost $250,000. That is expensive for what it is. For $220,000 you can get a Ferrari 458 Italia, which has a top speed for 202 mph. For $237,600, you can get a Gallardo Superleggera that has a top speed of 202 mph. There are cars out there that are cheaper and perform better than the Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale. However, the Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale is rarer and more exclusive than the Gallardo Superleggera or the 458 Italia. If you want a very exclusive, very quick, fast supercar with aggressive styling, then the Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale is a good buy at $250,000. If you do not want a rare or eclusive Lamborghini, then you should go with the Gallardo Superleggera.

First Impression: Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Balboni

Valentino Balboni spent 40 years as Lamborghini's chief test driver. From 1968 to 2008, Balboni has test driven 80% of all Lamborghinis ever built. To pay tribute to its legendary test driver, Lamborghini released a special edition of Gallardo in 2009, called the Lamborghini Gallarod LP550-2 Balboni. 250 Gallardo Balbonis were built.

I recently saw the Gallardo Balboni at the 2012 Houston Lamborghini Festival, and Valentino Balboni made a special appearance. The Gallardo Balboni looks just like a regular Gallardo on the outside, but with a stripe down the center of the car. Other features included a optional re-calibrated e-gear, redeveloped 45% slip differential, full leather black interior with white color stripes, polar white center console, a badge below the left side window that bears Balboni's signature and production number. Aslo, a majority of Gallardo's are four-wheel drive. The Gallardo Balboni is rear-wheel drive, as requested by Valentino Balboni.

The Gallardo Balboni is powered by a 5.2L V10 engine, paired with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed paddle-shifting e-gear transmission, that produces 542 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. The Gallardo Balboni goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 199 mph.Prices for the Gallardo Balboni start at $219,800, which is a bit much since a standard Gallardo 550-2 costs $181,900. The Gallardo Balboni is nearly $38,000 more than the standard Gallardo 550-2, but it is very rare with only 250 Gallardo Balbonis being built and the center stripe adds character to the car.

The Gallardo Balboni was Top Gear's 2009 Dream Car of the Year. It was also featured in Series 14, Episode 3, when James May was flying a caravan in a blimp while Richard Hammond was driving to the caravan site in a Gallardo Balboni. Tanner Foust drove the Gallardo Balboni during the pilot episode of Top Gear USA when the guys were doing a standing mile in three special edition Lamboghinis. The Gallardo Balboni also made a stop by Jay Leno's Garage. The Gallardo Balboni was also featured in Auto Esporte, Richard Hammond's Top Gear Uncovered, and Top Gear Korea. The Gallardo Balboni is playable in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, Need For Speed: The Run, and Need For Speed: World.

Final Thoughts: The Gallardo LP550-2 Balboni is a nice tribute for the legendary Lamborghini chief test driver. $219,800 for a special edition supercar is not bad either. The Gallardo Balboni is very quick and fast and is a driver's car. Valentino Balboni requested that the car be rear-wheel drive instead of the standard four-wheel drive. Tanner Foust did donuts in the Gallardo Balboni. The lost of horsepower did not hurt the performance of the Gallardo Balboni since the car lost 30 kg of weight due to using a RWD system instead of a AWD system. The Gallardo Balboni is rare, quick, fast, and is a good car for any Lamborghini, Italian, or supercar collection.
